Project in brief

Led end-to-end design for the FlexiPay mobile app, validating feasibility and aligning mobile and web experiences during a live rebrand.

The mobile app needed to move beyond POC and drive meaningful usage alongside the web dashboard.

Balancing API feasibility, backend constraints, and a new brand direction while delivering at pace.

A validated, re-skinned mobile app supported by a design system, driving 20% of transactions via mobile and 25% MAU.

Funding Circle Rajiv Iyer

Graham brought strong product judgement at a critical point for the FlexiPay mobile app. He balanced design quality, technical feasibility, and delivery constraints, helping us align mobile and web experiences while driving real usage. His work contributed directly to increased mobile transactions and gave the team a solid foundation to build on.

My role

I led end-to-end product design for Funding Circle’s FlexiPay mobile app, partnering closely with product, engineering, and stakeholders to validate feasibility, align design with a new brand direction, and improve adoption of mobile payments alongside the existing web dashboard.

My role spanned discovery, prototyping, customer testing, and system-level design decisions to ensure the mobile experience could scale without introducing technical or operational risk.

Problem

Funding Circle’s mobile app needed to move beyond proof of concept and become a credible, regularly used companion to the web product. However, the app was visually misaligned with the newly rebranded web dashboard and had not yet demonstrated clear adoption or behavioural impact.

Without a consistent experience across platforms, customers were less likely to trust or rely on the mobile app for regular transactions, limiting its value and growth potential.

Limited visibility into repayments and cash flow

Disconnected payment, repayment, and recipient flows

Challenges

The core challenge was elevating the mobile app to production quality while validating its technical feasibility and usage value.

This required:

  1. Testing API feasibility within a native mobile environment to ensure critical payment and repayment flows could be supported reliably.
  2. Applying a baseline re-skin aligned to the new brand while a broader design system was still in development, avoiding rework or fragmentation.

All work needed to balance backend constraints with design requirements in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment.

Designing flexible payment controls within SME constraints

Outcome

A validated mobile experience was delivered through a combination of feasibility testing, iterative prototyping, and a baseline re-skin aligned to Funding Circle’s rebrand. A foundational design system was established to support consistency across future mobile and web development.

The resulting app demonstrated clear behavioural impact:

  • 20% of all FlexiPay transactions now originate from the mobile app.
  • 25% of FlexiPay users engage with the app at least once per month (MAU).
  • Increased weekend spend, enabled by mobile accessibility and more frequent, flexible usage.

The work successfully transitioned the app from POC to a scalable product that complemented the core web platform.
